On 23rd January 2025, a bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers introduced a landmark resolution in the House of Representatives, reaffirming support for Taiwan’s international participation and condemning the People’s Republic of China (PRC)’s continued distortion of UN Resolution 2758. This development marks a significant advancement in the global Initiative 2758 campaign, led by the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China.

The resolution, co-led by IPAC Co-Chair Representative John Moolenaar, and IPAC members Representative Young Kim and Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi, rejects Beijing’s false narrative that UN Resolution 2758 constitutes international recognition of the PRC’s sovereignty over Taiwan. In actuality, the resolution merely addressed China’s representation at the United Nations and does not make any determination regarding Taiwan’s status.

In their joint statement, the lawmakers affirmed:

We must make clear that the United States will not be complicit in the CCP’s historical revisionism. This resolution makes explicit that Resolution 2758 does not preclude Taiwan’s participation in the UN system and other international bodies.

The resolution is backed by members of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, underscoring growing bipartisan consensus on countering Beijing’s efforts to isolate Taiwan diplomatically. It also follows similar motions passed by legislatures around the world, including recent action by the Czech Chamber of Deputies and the UK House of Commons.

This initiative aims to restore clarity in multilateral institutions, push back against the PRC’s campaign of coercion, and ensure Taiwan’s rightful inclusion in the international community.
